:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Scott -- We can fix this : 60 Billion dollars a year is a lot of money. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2020 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Paul ACCIAVATTI -- Quite good, not-a-novel : It is a story, of course, with a beginning, middle, and end. There are characters that go through changes. But it’s mostly a sort of opinion piece, a researched essay, a position paper with a plot. I’m a particular kind of reader who enjoys the dry technical details, and Stan Robinson knows his stuff. But that might be off-putting to readers who just want to enjoy a story. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2020 )
- from AutonomeusTop Contributor: Classic Rock -- TOP 1000 REVIEWER : A provocative scenario for how climate change might be fought from 2025-2053 ( 4.0 out of 5 stars )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Guy Marsden -- tthoughtful book filled with endless ramblings and rants about climate change : I admire KSR's commitment to writing climate fiction and have read almost all his books. This one did not work for me though. There was not enough story and characters to maintain a healthy flow. He was just using this book as a pedestal to get up on his soapbox and share many thoughtful and clever ideas about how to solve the climate crisis. It would've been better as a nonfiction book in my mind. There is no question that Kim does a deep dive into his research and knows the subject of climate science really well, as I do. So for those who would like to learn a lot about the issues and some off-the-wall solutions to the crisis, it is an interesting read with many thoughtful ideas. It's just not an enjoyable book to read as a story. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 23, 2020 )
- 2.0 out of 5 stars from Tufnell Paul -- Brave, But Unsuccessful, Attempt at Projecting a Non-Dystopian Resolution of the Climate Crisis : The author's heart is very much in the right place, but I am afraid this version of the planet's future did not convince. Putting aside whether one accepts the scientific ideas presented (I couldn't believe in them.), the real problem is in the characterisation. Everyone is too nice and reasonable. Current observable behaviours over Brexit or Covid show clearly that people do not interpret known facts, still less projected risks, in the same way and are prepared to fight tooth and nail to see their own point of view prevail. The anger and frustration of facing up against opponents who are neither willing or able to see things the same way as oneself or in line with current scientific orthodoxy is not covered. Nevertheless many good ideas are turned up and considered, possibly a little too superficially. Sadly, this turns out to be a somewhat Pollyanna-ish outlook on the Climate crisis. - 4.0 out of 5 stars from Traffic -- Good Book, Though a Bit Preachy in Places : I wasn't sure about this book when I first started it. It appeared to be part novel and part essay with regards to Climate Change. However, I found it to be an intriguing book. I do find KSR's books quite difficult to read at times, as they can be full of scientific information, but TMofF was easy enough to read and understand. If you're a climate change believer you will probably enjoy this book. if you're a climate changer denier, you might find it a bit preachy in places. However, I do recommend it. - 4.0 out of 5 stars from bibliovore -- cludgy : Is this a novel or a diatribe? ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 26, 2021 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Interesting novel about ways of solving the problem of climate change but far too positive. : SKR is as always a fascinating writer. Some familiar themes of his are evident. It reminded me of the Scientific Romances of HG Wells such as "Men like Gods". The future he maps is broadly possible - human action can reduce the impact of climate change. However I do not believe that human societies are capable of sensible concerted timely action to protect the world environment. The naked ape roams across the world, consuming as it goes, refusing to control its immediate gratification and desires, rejecting all responsibility for its actions, and leaving its litter and excreta behind to pollute the environment it depends on. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 12, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Paul Heskett -- Read and heed this timely warning : This is an extraordinary novel, perhaps Robinson's best. The narrative style is variable, sometimes whimsical, sometimes sober speculation and extrapolation - bits of James Joyce alternating with Fred Hoyle or Olaf Stapledon...
